How Environmental Pollutants, From Pesticides To Heavy Metals, Can Cause Blood Cancer

The most well-known variables influencing blood malignancies, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma, include heredity and lifestyle. However, Dr. Shivali Ahlawat, an oncologist at Oncquest Laboratories, asserts that environmental contaminants also have a substantial role in the likelihood of acquiring these malignancies. Toxins including benzene, pesticides, heavy metals, and industrial pollutants can cause mutations and interfere with the body’s blood-forming machinery, which raises the risk of cancer, she said in a recent interview.

Benzene and the Risk of Blood Cancer

Benzene, a significant carcinogen present in automobile emissions, cigarette smoke, and industrial solvents, is especially harmful, according to Dr. Ahlawat. Because benzene harms the hematopoietic cells in bone marrow, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has connected long-term exposure to the chemical to an increased risk of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Cancer may eventually result from these detrimental alterations in blood cells.

The Function of Heavy Metals and Pesticides

Additionally, a higher incidence of Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other blood malignancies has been linked to some pesticides. They induce oxidative stress and interfere with regular cell functions, which results in DNA mutations. Additionally, extended exposure to ionizing radiation and heavy metals like lead and arsenic impairs the body’s capacity to repair DNA, which aids in the development of blood cancer.

In order to reduce the risk, Dr. Ahlawat suggests limiting exposure to known carcinogens, getting frequent tests, and wearing protective gear in high-risk employment. By enabling prompt action, early identification of blood anomalies can significantly improve results.

We may better protect our health and lower the incidence of blood malignancies by being aware of the threats posed by environmental pollutants.
