Does a Stronger Immune System Aid in the Treatment of Cancer? A New Study Provides Important Details

The study examined information from more than 90,000 whole genome sequencing (WGS) samples obtained from cancer patients and healthy people, and it was published in the journal Nature Genetics. The findings mark a significant advancement in our knowledge of how the body’s defense mechanisms affect the development and prognosis of cancer.

Methods of the Study: A Novel Method for Examining Immune Cells

Researchers employed a cutting-edge method known as Immune Lymphocyte Estimation from Nucleotide Sequencing (ImmuneLENS) to carry out their investigation. Using whole genome sequencing data, this technique enables researchers to determine the percentage of T cells and B cells, two important immune cell types.

Researchers found a substantial variation in the quantity of circulating T lymphocytes in the bloodstream between cancer patients and healthy individuals by comparing their data. These immune cells were significantly less prevalent in cancer patients than in healthy individuals, which may indicate that a compromised immune response is connected to the advancement of the disease.

Better Survival Rates Are Associated with Higher T Cell Levels

One of the study’s most significant conclusions was that the percentage of T cells in the blood was a reliable indicator of cancer survival. Within five years following surgery, patients with higher T cell counts had a 47% lower chance of dying than those with lower levels.

The relationship between T cell count and survival was true even after controlling for variables like age, disease stage, and kind of cancer. According to researchers, this finding may yield useful biological markers that help physicians make better treatment decisions.

A Novel Approach to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Cancer

Analysis of the immune system in cancer patients has historically concentrated on the tumor rather than the body’s overall immunological response. However, this study indicates that rather than examining immune cells within the tumor alone, evaluating T cell counts in the blood may offer a more accurate forecast of survival rates.

“While most immune system analysis up to this point has focused on the tumor itself, with the new tool, doctors may be able to predict how long a cancer patient will survive better than the number of T cells in the tumor alone,” explained Professor Nicholas McGranahan, senior author of the study from the UCL Cancer Institute.

Gender Variations and the Immune System’s Contribution to the Development of Cancer

The study also revealed an unexpected finding: males with cancer experience a faster decline in immune cell numbers than women. The precise cause of this discrepancy is still unknown, but it may have significant ramifications for future tailored cancer treatments.

The researchers also observed that some people who appeared healthy at the time of sample collection had blood B cell counts that were below normal and went on to acquire cancer. This poses significant queries:

Could low B cell counts be a sign of cancer in its early stages before symptoms show up?
Could immune system alterations prior to cancer be early indicators of the onset of disease?
