Delhi’s Historic Resurrection of the BJP
After a 27-year hiatus, the BJP returned to power in the nation’s capital in 2025 when it won a majority in the Delhi Assembly elections. The results were announced on February 8 after the elections, which took place on February 5. The AAP only won 22 seats, while the BJP easily crossed the majority threshold with 48 of the 70 seats. For the third time in a row, the Indian National Congress was unable to secure any seats.
The outcome of the election showed that Delhi’s politics had changed significantly. Only 2.06 percentage points separated the two parties in terms of vote share, despite the BJP defeating the AAP by a margin of 26 seats. With 45.61% of the vote, the BJP won, and the AAP received 43.55%.
The BJP’s Increase in Seat Count and Vote Share
The BJP experienced a sharp increase in electoral success, going from winning only 8 seats in 2020 to a resounding triumph with 48 seats in 2025. There was a 7.1 percentage point increase in its vote share. AAP, meanwhile, saw a sharp fall in its vote share, which fell from 53.57% in 2020 to 43.55% in 2025.
Over the years, the BJP was the only party in Delhi to continuously grow its share of the vote. With a vote share of 33.07%, the BJP took home 32 seats in 2013. Its seat count fell sharply to only three in 2015, while its vote share stayed comparatively steady at 32.19%. But 2025 brought about a significant change, making the BJP the political powerhouse in Delhi.
Ramlila Maidan’s grand swearing-in ceremony
The BJP has said that the next Chief Minister and the Delhi Cabinet will be sworn in on February 20 at the renowned Ramlila Maidan. More than 25,000 to 30,000 people are anticipated to attend, including well-known Hindu seers and leaders of the local community. The consecration ceremony at the Ayodhya Ram Mandir is probably going to be the celebration’s central topic.
The event is anticipated to be attended by prominent members of the BJP and NDA, such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. As it seizes power in Delhi, the party wants to demonstrate its vision for governance and reaffirm its core beliefs.
A New Era for Politics in Delhi
An important turning point in Delhi’s political history will occur with the 2025 elections. From 1998 onward, Sheila Dikshit’s Congress and Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP have controlled Delhi’s government. A new era in the capital’s governance has begun with the BJP’s comeback to power. As he tackles the issues of public welfare, infrastructure, and governance in the nation’s capital, Rekha Gupta’s leadership will be widely observed.
The BJP will concentrate on fulfilling its campaign pledges and establishing a new course for Delhi’s future when it returns to power after over thirty years.
