Amid market volatility, Tuhin Kanta Pandey was appointed as the new SEBI chief.

The Appointment and Tenure of Pandey

From the day he takes over, Pandey, an IAS officer from the 1987 batch, will oversee SEBI for a three-year initial tenure. He is well-positioned to handle the current difficulties facing the Indian financial markets thanks to his experience managing important finance-related departments.

Pandey’s Outstanding Professional Experience

Pandey oversaw the Department of Revenue as the highest ranking official in the Ministry of Finance prior to his appointment with SEBI. In addition, he was the secretary with the longest tenure in both the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) and the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM). His management of government equity in public sector enterprises was greatly aided by his leadership.

Important Contributions in the Ministry of Finance

After his predecessor, Sanjay Malhotra, was appointed Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Pandey assumed leadership of the revenue department on January 9. Pandey had a key role in crafting the 2025–2026 Budget, which provided middle-class taxpayers with ₹1 lakh crore in tax breaks. In order to replace the outdated Income Tax Act of 1961, he also helped create a new income tax bill. In order to calm the markets and preserve investor confidence during this volatile time, SEBI would greatly benefit from Pandey’s broad experience in public finance and tax policy as well as his strategic views.
